THE FUTURE, my first comic
With Aries Season coming to a close a new idea dropped in. In the ongoing effort to amplify the voices of young children in their activism, what about a comic style mini zine, about that time we took the forest to City Hall. I’ve never drawn a comic before, but its a medium I’ve really grown to appreciate as my child’s love for them has grown.
Here is my first comic, a new mini zine offering for the Weelaunee Coalition Press, THE FUTURE. Illustrated by me, sharing the powerful words of 9 year old Atlanta forest defender, Luis.
December 4, 2023, the Weelaunee Coalition collectively organized a nonviolent direct action, a field trip to City Hall, to speak for the trees, to demand, they stop construction, end destruction, save Weelaunee, and once and for all let the people vote, to stop Cop City.
While Luis and an intergenerational collective of community members waited to give public comment inside the chamber, approximately 30 students & educators from Morgan Oliver School, a neighborhood antiracist elementary school, marched through and in loops outside the chamber chanting,
“Your choices impact us! Our voices matter!
“Stop the greed! Save the trees!”
“No trees, no peace!”
Luis spoke from the heart while other forest defenders took turns reading aloud 11 children’s books on environmental stewardship, community care, abolition and the rights of a child, to City Council, during the last full council meeting, of the “Year of the Youth.”
“…children are our future.
Teach them well and let them lead the way...”
